Welcome to Dante's Bead Inferno. I hope you enjoy your visit!

My name is Karen Hunt and I'm a self-representing artist (SRA). I've been making glass beads in my home studio since the autumn of 2005. The credit (or the responsibility, depending on who in my family you're talking to) for my obsession with lampworking lays at the feet of my friends Karen and Martha. If they had never shown me the beautiful jewelry they make I would never have thought "hmmm, I wonder how those beads are made."

Thanks guys-you rock!

My beads are made using Moretti/Effetre or Vetrofond glass. Because I want my beads to bring their owners enjoyment for years to come, every bead I make is properly kiln annealed for lasting beauty and durability.

Some people have asked me about the significance of my studio name. When I go out to work at my torch, my cat Dante always comes out to bask in the warmth generated by the torch and the kiln.
When I was struggling to come up with a name for my studio I asked my son for his input. He thought about it for a few minutes and came back to me with Dante's Bead Inferno. It was perfect-it incorporates everything I enjoy about being in my studio!

How the beads are made

Lampworking is the art of melting glass rods in a flame then wrapping the molten glass around a coated stainless steel mandrel to form the bead. After the basic bead is formed, surface decoration is added.
